Library Policies

Borrowers must present their Southeastern ID cards to check out materials from Steelman. To obtain borrowing privileges, you must submit a borrowing registration form (click here). To qualify for library privileges, a person must be one of the following:

  • Student enrolled for current semester
  • Faculty member, spouse of a faculty member or a staff member of Southeastern
  • Community borrower who pays a yearly fee of $50 (limited privileges)

Checkout Periods

Two-week checkout: general collection, CDs and most Curriculum Lab books

Seven-day checkout: Curriculum Lab textbooks, videos (DVD and VHS) and computer software

In-library use only: All reference books, microforms, periodicals and two-hour reserve items

Checkout Limits

  • Books — Unlimited
  • CDs — 4
  • DVDs, VHS, Curriculum Lab texts software — 2

All checked out materials should be returned to the circulation desk or the book-drop. Materials that are not checked out should be left on the study tables or available book carts. Please do not re-shelve items. Reserve materials must be handed to a library worker, not dropped in the book-drop.

Books and CDs may be renewed for the original loan period. If borrowing privileges are suspended or if the material has been placed on hold by another borrower, renewal is not allowed.

You may check your account on SPARC and notify the circulation desk if you see a problem. You may renew books that are not overdue via SPARC, as well.

Fines will accumulate from the date a book is due until it is renewed, returned, or reported lost. These fines accumulate per item checked out. General collection and most Curriculum Lab books and CDs are $.20 per day. Curriculum Lab textbooks, reserve materials, and videos/DVDs are $.50 per day. Two-hour checkouts are $2.00 per hour. If amount owed is over $20 or there are more than three items overdue on an account, borrowing privileges will be suspended.

Lost Books

Books not returned by the last day of the semester and books that are 30 or more days overdue will be presumed lost. Returning a “lost” book will remove the book charge but not the processing charge or the transfer fee.

Replacement costs for lost books include the following charges:

  1. Current market value of the item
  2. $20 default processing fee
  3. $2.50 fee for bookkeeping

Any remaining fines and charges at the end of the semester will be reported to the business office and added to your bill.

Any materials returned after the transfer of records to the business office will be credited to your account, but the fees and fines will remain.

All items are due the final Friday of the semester.

We have many computers for use in the library. We have laptops available for checkout (cannot leave the library), computers on the main and second floors and computers in individual computer rooms. Computers are generally available for use for two hours at a time. Disruptive behavior in the library may result in the loss of your library computer privileges, however.

Also, be sure to not save your files on a library computer’s hard drive (C:). They will be deleted! Save your files to a memory stick or to your network folder on the H: drive.

The code of conduct outlined in the student handbook also applies to the Steelman Library. Library student assistants are considered officials of the university while on duty at the library.

The library’s purpose is to assist in classroom and personal research, support the curriculum and meet the educational and informational needs of our users. Thus, any disruptive behavior may be addressed by library staff.

Specifically, these behaviors are not permitted in the library:

  • Eating
  • Loud conversations, whether in person or via cell phone
  • Running
  • Excessive physical contact between members of the opposite sex
  • Noise at a level that disrupts others who are studying
  • Damage to or unauthorized use of any library property
  • Refusal to comply with clearly stated policies or directives issued by any library staff, including student assistants
  • Refusal to produce ID when requested
  • Other behaviors that are deemed disruptive by library staff

Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in action up to loss of all library privileges and/or referral to the Judicial Review Board.
