Room Inspections

Southeastern is a residential campus that fosters a sense of community as a part of the body of Christ. Residential housing provides a unique experience of living with students of different personalities, interests, and cultural backgrounds. This opportunity helps students learn, grow, and build relationships. Living on campus enhances the academic, social, spiritual, and personal dimensions of students’ lives. Thus, please note the following information about residence hall room inspection that is an important part of community living.

To ensure that the university provides an environment that is safe, healthy and conducive to learning, Student Housing personnel are authorized to enter a room for inspection on a regular basis (usually once per week, but more frequently if needed). Since residents must live with others, rooms should be neat and clean at all times.

Room inspections are graded on an excellent, pass, or failure rating system. If a room receives an excellent grade, all roommates will have their name automatically placed in two monthly drawings, one for a reserved parking spot by their residence hall and another for 2 Disney tickets. Notification of winners will be sent monthly via SEU e-mail.

The Housing office reviews all aspects of a room in light of health, trash, and safety issues, and the ability for Housekeeping to complete their assigned work. (View printable Room Inspection Expectations to the right.)

Floors

  • Should remain clear at all times of personal belongings that are not in use. An excessive amount of items prohibits housekeeping from completing their responsibilities.
  • Should remain clear at all times of all trash

Sinks/Counter and Shower Floors

  • Sink/counter and shower floors should all remain clear of an excessive amount of personal items that are not in use, enabling Housekeeping to adequately clean.
  • Should continually be clear of personal hygiene products (toothbrush, hair brush/comb, razor, etc.)
  • Should remain clear of all trash, dirty dishes, or food.

Trash and Food Items

  • Trash should not be above the brim and should be taken and placed in the hallway trash can periodically by the resident.
  • Trash or food items should not be scattered throughout the room.
  • Food items should be secured and stored in closed containers as to not draw insects or rodents.

In addition to the room inspection expectations above please see below for Excellent Rating expectations:

Bed – should be made

Desk – should remain organized and free from clutter

Dresser – should remain clean and free from clutter

When Housekeeping is unable to accomplish their daily cleaning responsibilities (i.e. regular vacuuming and bathroom cleaning), an immediate inspection from Student Housing will occur. Since rooms are to always be in a neat and clean condition, other departments (i.e. Student Life, Environmental Services, Safety and Security, etc.), who may need to enter a room, may report an unsatisfactory condition leading to an immediate inspection from Student Housing personnel.

Rooms that receive a Failure rating must be in satisfactory condition by 8 a.m. the next morning for a follow-up inspection from Housing personnel sometime that day. All rooms that receive a follow-up failure rating will receive a $25 fine.

Room Inspection Ratings and Sanctions

Rating Sanction Additional Communication
1st Failure Warning citation Memo spelling out a specific course of action to avoid subsequent fines.
2nd Failure $25 fine Memo specifying cleaning that is needed to avoid additional penalties.
3rd Failure $50 fine Memo specifying cleaning that is needed to avoid additional penalties. Voluntary meeting with Housing personnel.
4th Failure $100 fine Memo specifying cleaning that is needed to avoid additional penalties. Required meeting with Director of Student Housing and Resident Director.
5th Failure Suspension

Note: The above charts reflect sanctions during one school year (fall and spring semesters). The grading does not automatically revert to a warning for the spring semester.

To document the condition of a room that has received an unsatisfactory room inspection rating, photos are taken of relevant areas of the room.

Common areas in the 4-room suites of Aventura, Esperanza, and Destino Halls as well as the Buttercup houses will be given an independent and additional grade in the same manner as individual rooms.

Residents are responsible for the proper disposal of all garbage from their rooms. Residents who live in South Pointe, Valencia, and Mira Lago are responsible for the appearance of the patio area (in front or back) of their residence area. All trash is to be placed in proper receptacles and stairwell areas must be kept clear.

Residents must store bikes in campus bike racks and motorcycles must be parked in parking space. Unapproved locations include in rooms, lobbies, hallways or under stairwells. Bikes found in residence hall rooms will automatically generate a failure room inspection rating. Due to fire, safety, and insurance issues, grills of any type are not permitted to be used or stored on campus. Please contact the Housing Office for further information.
